Meeting Growing Water Demands in the Capital, Improving the Living Environment for Residents

    photoSigning Ceremony

  • 1. On 3 December, 2009 JICA (President: Sadako Ogata) signed an agreement with the government of the Kingdom of Thailand in the capital of Bangkok to provide a Japanese ODA loan for the Eighth Bangkok Water Supply Improvement Project for up to 4.462 billion yen.
  • 2. The Eighth Bangkok Water Supply Improvement Project will expand the water production facilities which will increase the capacity of water supply in Bangkok Metropolitan Area by 800,000 tons per day. After the completion of the project, the service area is expected to be more than 2,300 square kilometers, and the service population is expected to be 8.7 million (98 percent of the population in the jurisdiction); this project will respond to increasing demand for water, and improve the living environment for residents in the region. The loan funds will be allocated to water treatment plant expansion, reservoir construction, pump installation, and consulting services for tender assistance and construction supervision.
  • 3. The Bangkok Metropolitan Area is not only the political and economic center of Thailand with the population of over 10 million, but also holds a vital position in the Asia region. As the demand for water increases by the influence of concentration of population and expansion of economic activities, there are concerns that the water shortage will become dire. This project will provide waterworks infrastructures to solve this problem, and is expected to play a major role in meeting growing water demand.
  • 4. Japan has a long history of cooperation with the water supply sector in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area that reaches back 30 years. Japan has provided a wide range of assistance in the water sector including plumbing technology transfers and human resource training through technical cooperation, as well as water treatment plant construction with Japanese ODA loans. JICA has also provided grant aid, including construction of a technical training center for water management which accepts trainees from neighboring countries for Third-country training programs. JICA will continue providing outstanding Japanese technology and expertise for comprehensive support to Thailand’s water supply sector.
